THE HISTORY OF MARSALA
It was 1773 when John Woodhouse, a young merchant from Liverpool, landed in Marsala and here like any good guest, he was welcomed with a glass of Perpetuo wine in a tavern in the city.
Tradition has it that Woodhouse was headed to the port of Mazara, but due to bad weather, he was forced to divert the route towards Marsala, unaware that the wind was carrying him towards a new and unexpected commercial enterprise. Recognizing in that wine characteristics that shared it with Port, Sherry and Madeira, products of which the British market was already an excellent consumer, he saw in the marketing of Perpetuo a good business opportunity.
He sent a first shipment to his relatives in Liverpool and added some wine brandy to make sure the product didn't spoil on the way. He called the wine Marsala because of its origin. The approval of the relatives confirmed Woodhouse's intuition, who soon returned to Sicily to develop the first important structural investments and set up the production system of Marsala.
He began to export the wine produced, directly with his fleet, commuting between Sicily, Malta and England. Thus opens the first chapter of the commercial development of Marsala.
To fully taste the marsala wines it is not enough to stop at the visual, olfactory and gustatory analysis but it is necessary to know the story that is kept inside each bottle, made of history and unique production peculiarities, which make Marsala an authentic historical and enological national heritage. .
